Summer activities
Hiking, via ferratas, cycling, lakes and waterfalls in the heart of the Schladming-Dachstein region.
Between the Tauern and the Dachstein
Gröbming lies in the wide Enns Valley, surrounded by two completely different mountain worlds.
To the south rise the green peaks of the Niedere Tauern, including the Schladming Tauern. To the north the landscape changes dramatically – above Gröbming tower the pale limestone and dolomite walls of the Kammspitz, the Stoderzinken and the mighty Dachstein massif, crowned by the 2,995-metre Hoher Dachstein.
And if you love the Italian Dolomites, you will find a touch of their atmosphere here too. Steep, pale rock faces and sharp mountain outlines contrast with green alpine valleys and flower-filled meadows. Cows and sheep graze peacefully, while higher up, with a bit of luck, you may spot chamois or even ibex.
It is the Alpine landscape exactly as you picture it when you long to escape everyday life for a while.
Mountains for everyone
You don’t have to be a mountaineer to make the most of the mountains here. In summer, numerous cable cars operate across the region and take you comfortably up to higher ground. From there you can set off on an easy walk or a full-day hike, tackle a via ferrata, enjoy a short panoramic stroll or simply sit on a bench and take in the view of the Alps.
Traditional alpine pastures and huts – the Almen – are an essential part of the Austrian mountains. On your hike you can stop for homemade refreshments, local cheese, cured meats and regional specialities, or enjoy a cold drink on a terrace in the middle of the mountains.
Higher up, classic mountain huts – the Hütten – await you, including the traditional huts of the Austrian Alpine Club. They are natural goals and stopping points on mountain tours, where after the climb you can relax over a hot meal, a coffee or a beer and enjoy the views of the surrounding peaks.
And you don’t need to be an athlete. You can choose from easy trails suitable for families with children or older guests, as well as high-alpine hikes and challenging via ferratas.
Mountain lakes, waterfalls, gorges, alpine pastures, mountain huts, Kneipp trails or just a peaceful walk through an Alpine valley – every day can look completely different.
Schladming-Dachstein Card – a holiday full of experiences
One of the biggest advantages of a summer holiday with us is the Schladming-Dachstein Card, which our guests receive at no extra charge during their stay.
The card includes more than 100 free and many more discounted activities – cable cars, regional buses, outdoor pools and lakes, museums, toll roads and family attractions.
Every day you can enjoy one free return trip on a selected cable car. For stays of at least two nights, a ride on the Dachstein Glacier Cable Car is included as well.
On a family holiday in particular, the card can save you hundreds of euros. Even more important, though, is the freedom it gives you – check the weather in the morning, pick an excursion and off you go.
Hiking and via ferratas
Schladming-Dachstein is a paradise for hikers. You can take a cable car up and start your hike high in the mountains, head for one of the many mountain lakes or stay in the valleys and enjoy a leisurely walk.
More experienced hikers can take on demanding high-alpine routes and via ferratas with views of the Enns Valley and the surrounding massifs.
Our guests can borrow hiking poles and via ferrata sets directly at the hotel.
A land of water – mountain lakes, waterfalls and gorges
Schladming-Dachstein is one of the richest areas of Styria when it comes to water. More than 300 mountain lakes, over 100 waterfalls, wild mountain streams and deep rocky gorges offer countless options for excursions – from a short walk to a full-day high-alpine hike.
And you don’t have to travel far for the first of these experiences – the nearest waterfalls and lakes are just a few minutes’ drive from the hotel.
Almost 50 places by the water within an hour of the hotel
And these are just some of the options. From a short walk to a waterfall, a swim in a mountain lake or relaxing in a thermal spa, all the way to a full-day hike among high-alpine tarns.
Here you can discover water in a completely different way every day.
With us you don't just get a bed, breakfast and dinner… You also get our personal experience of the region – and no Google, ChatGPT or any other AI can replace that…
By bike – from easy cycle paths to alpine trails
Schladming-Dachstein offers excellent conditions for leisure cyclists, mountain bikers, e-bikers and road cyclists. And from Gröbming you can set off on many rides straight from the hotel.
If you fancy a relaxed day, the well-known Enns Cycle Path (Ennsradweg) runs through the valley along the River Enns and is ideal for families and leisure cyclists. Along the way you can stop at lakes, in villages or for refreshments, and easily adapt the length of the ride to your fitness.
With a mountain bike or e-bike, the options grow considerably. Side valleys, forest roads and mountain trails lead you to alpine pastures, lakes and viewpoints high above the valley. An e-bike is the ideal way to explore much of the region without racing fitness.
If you are after more adrenaline, around Schladming you will find the Schladming Bike Park on the Planai and other mountain bike trails. On selected cable cars you can take your bike with you and, instead of a long climb, simply enjoy the ride down.
Road cyclists are well catered for too. Mountain roads, long valleys and alpine climbs let you plan anything from a gentle ride to a proper all-day challenge.
Your bike has its own place with us
When you return from a ride, there is no need to leave your bike on the car or wonder where to keep it overnight. You can store your bikes safely in our secure, dry hotel garage, where you can charge e-bikes and, if needed, carry out basic servicing or minor repairs.
In the morning, all you have to do is get on and head off on your next adventure.
So where to go?
We are happy to advise you in person. We ride bikes ourselves and know many of the routes in the area from our own experience. We can recommend a relaxed family ride, an e-MTB route to a mountain hut, a full-day loop or a more technical trail – depending on your bike, your fitness, the weather and how much time you want to spend in the saddle.
And sometimes, instead of explaining the route over a map, we simply hop on our bikes and ride together :)
Swimming just minutes from the hotel
After a day in the mountains, a swim does you good. And you don’t have to travel far for it.
The nearest outdoor pool is right in Gröbming, only about 5 to 7 minutes’ walk from our hotel. All outdoor pools in the region are free with the Schladming-Dachstein Card.
In the area you will also find natural pools and swimming lakes. The natural lake in Aich, just a few minutes away by car, is a favourite. If you want to spend a whole day by the water, we recommend the Putterersee – a large lake that is also the warmest in Styria. Beautiful mountains frame the scene, and there is a grassy beach, a proper restaurant, attractions and hire of stand-up paddleboards, rowing boats and pedalos.
Several of the lakes can also be reached by bike.
Adventure right in Gröbming
You don’t have to travel far for a proper dose of adrenaline. Right in Gröbming you will find the Abenteuerpark Gröbming – the largest high ropes park in Austria.
More than two kilometres of climbing routes offer 22 different courses and around 200 obstacles of varying difficulty. The little ones are not forgotten either – the mini course is suitable for children from the age of three.
And then there is the Zipline Stoderzinken. On the 2.5-kilometre line, split into two sections, you fly over the landscape at up to 115 km/h and at points up to 161 metres above the ground.
If even that is not enough, you can try the 800-metre FlyingCoaster.
There’s simply no chance of getting bored here.
The Stoderzinken and the most beautiful place in Austria
One of the places we recommend to almost everyone is our local mountain, the Stoderzinken.
The drive up the 13 km panoramic road alone offers wonderful views as it climbs through several alpine vegetation zones. From the car park you can continue on foot to the summit or to the little Friedenskircherl, a chapel perched on a rocky outcrop at 1,898 metres.
In 2022 this spot won over the whole of Austria – viewers of the Austrian broadcaster ORF voted it the most beautiful place in Austria in the TV contest 9 Plätze – 9 Schätze (9 Places – 9 Treasures).
The view from here is one you won’t forget. Far below you lie the Enns Valley and Gröbming, opposite rise the Schladming Tauern, and the ridge of the mighty Dachstein massif completes the panorama.
Hallstatt, Obertraun and the Salzkammergut within easy reach
Gröbming’s location has one more advantage – if you want a break from more strenuous activities during your holiday, you can head to the neighbouring Salzkammergut, one of Austria’s best-known lake districts.
A day trip can be combined with a visit to world-famous Hallstatt and a stroll along the Hallstätter See. A unique view of the lake awaits at the “5fingers” viewing platform on the Dachstein Krippenstein, which you reach by cable car from neighbouring Obertraun – on the way up you can also visit the fascinating Dachstein Giant Ice Cave and the Mammoth Cave.
You can also combine the trip with a visit to the historic salt mines (Hallstatt or Altaussee) and explore more lakes and villages in the Ausseerland.
Ennstal-Classic – when legends bring Gröbming to life
Twice a year, peaceful Gröbming turns into a place where the scent of mountain air is joined by the sound of historic engines.
The Ennstal-Classic is one of the best-known classic car events in Austria, and Gröbming is its home. Every summer, historic cars and crews from many countries come here to cover hundreds of kilometres on beautiful Alpine roads over several days.
During the Ennstal-Classic, Gröbming becomes one of the centres of the action, and you can admire the motoring legends up close along with a packed programme of side events.
If you love classic cars, it is well worth planning your stay around the Ennstal-Classic. And even if you are not a car enthusiast, the atmosphere of the event is an experience in itself.
Golf between the Dachstein and the Schladming Tauern
The Schladming-Dachstein region also offers excellent opportunities for golfers. Within 30 minutes by car you can choose from four 18-hole golf courses, each with a completely different character – spectacular Schloss Pichlarn beneath the Grimming massif, the Golfclub Schladming-Dachstein designed by Bernhard Langer, the flat Golf & Landclub Ennstal-Weißenbach and Radstadt with its unique golf gondola, the Birdie Jet.
Four courses, four different golfing experiences – and Landhaus St. Georg**** in Gröbming as the ideal base!
What about other adventures?
The mountains are not the only playground in our region. The River Enns and its tributaries also offer more or less “adrenaline-fuelled” options – whether you are a paddler with your own kit or want to try rafting or canyoning…
If you are more in the mood for a trip than a sporting challenge, we will happily recommend panoramic roads and mountain passes for your four- or two-wheeled “horsepower”.
A summer evening in Gröbming
After an active day in the mountains, a little peace and quiet is welcome. And that is one of the things you will love about Gröbming.
Gröbming is a pleasant, peaceful little town where you don’t have to battle the bustle of a big tourist centre in the evening. From the hotel you can simply set off on foot for an evening stroll, wander through the town centre, sit down for a drink or just enjoy the silence and atmosphere of a summer evening beneath the mountains.
And if it rains?
Even a rainy day doesn’t have to be a lost day of your holiday.
In the region you will find museums, indoor attractions and plenty of places for shorter excursions. Sometimes it is also enough to look at the forecast a little more closely – while it rains in one part of the region, conditions a few kilometres away can be completely different.
Either way, we are here for you – we are always glad to help you make sense of the weather and the options our region has to offer.
You relax. Leave the planning to us.
You don’t go on holiday to spend two hours every evening searching the internet for where to go the next day.
We know our region first-hand. We hike in the mountains, ride our bikes, try out trails, via ferratas and new hiking routes, and are always looking for more places worth visiting.
Tell us what you feel like doing, how fit you are, whether you are travelling with children and how much time you want to spend on the trip. We will gladly recommend a specific route based on the weather and current conditions.
We can lend you hiking poles and via ferrata equipment directly at the hotel. And sometimes, instead of drawing the route on a map, we simply set off together.
