Skiing in the heart of Schladming-Dachstein

Winter here is all about skiing. Thanks to Gröbming’s location, several ski areas are within easy reach – from smaller family resorts to top-class skiing on the Schladming 4-Mountain Ski Circuit (4-Berge-Skischaukel).

The closest are Galsterberg and Hauser Kaibling. Hauser Kaibling is the gateway to the linked ski area that continues over Planai and Hochwurzen all the way to Reiteralm. Further afield you will also find Fageralm and the smaller Rittisberg. Most ski areas in the Schladming-Dachstein region are therefore roughly 10 to 40 minutes’ drive from our hotel.

And if you like to switch resorts, there are many more options. For a day trip you can head to Tauplitz, Riesneralm or Planneralm, and on a longer excursion to other well-known ski regions too.

Ski amadé

One ski pass, countless possibilities

Schladming-Dachstein is part of Ski amadé, one of the largest ski alliances in Europe. With a multi-day ski pass, you don’t have to stick to a single resort.

One day you can ski on the Hauser Kaibling or the Planai, the next you can discover Flachau, Wagrain, Flachauwinkl or Gastein, for example. That way you can choose each day according to the weather, the snow conditions or simply your mood.

For families

Ideal for families with children too

Schladming-Dachstein also offers excellent conditions for a family ski holiday. Galsterberg, Hauser Kaibling and Fageralm have children’s areas, easier slopes and plenty of attractions for little skiers. Older children and teenagers will love the fun slopes, snow parks and other playful features on the pistes.

And for complete beginners we have one big advantage literally around the corner. Just about 100 metres from the hotel there is a small practice slope with a magic carpet, run by the municipality. The youngest can try their first metres on skis in peace or romp around in the snow and on sledges – without having to get in the car. For just €2 a day!

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing in Ramsau am Dachstein

If you prefer cross-country skiing, nearby Ramsau am Dachstein is one of the best-known cross-country centres in the Alps.

An extensive network of perfectly groomed trails offers options for both classic and skating – from leisurely routes through the snowy landscape to sporty circuits. Alongside the trails run cleared winter footpaths, so walkers and families with children can enjoy the beauty of Ramsau too.

Snowshoeing

Winter hiking and snowshoeing

You don’t have to explore the winter landscape only on skis. Throughout the region you will find numerous cleared winter footpaths, and thanks to the cable cars you can easily reach higher ground too.

Snowshoe hikes offer even more peace. Simply leave the busier spots behind, and within a few minutes you can find yourself in the middle of a silent, snow-covered landscape.

We are happy to lend our guests snowshoes and hiking poles directly at the hotel. For the more experienced, we also have crampons and ice axes.

Ski touring

Ski touring and skimo

The region also offers superb opportunities for ski tourers – from marked ascent routes in the ski areas to tours in open mountain terrain.

If you’re not sure where to go, we are happy to advise you. We go ski touring regularly ourselves and know many routes in the area. When choosing, however, you should always take into account the current snow and avalanche conditions, the weather and your own experience.

Before a climb such as the Hoher Dachstein, you can borrow crampons, an ice axe or a via ferrata set at the hotel.

Evenings in the mountains

When it gets dark, winter isn't over

A winter’s day doesn’t have to end at sunset. Galsterberg and Hochwurzen offer night skiing and tobogganing on floodlit runs.

We particularly recommend night tobogganing. You take the cable car up into the mountains, can stop for dinner or a hot drink at a mountain hut, and then enjoy a toboggan run several kilometres long down to the valley. Hochwurzen has a natural toboggan run almost seven kilometres long, Galsterberg one of around five kilometres.

It is one of our favourite winter experiences – and definitely not just for children.

Advent

Advent and winter evenings

The run-up to Christmas has a special atmosphere in Schladming-Dachstein. Advent events, traditional markets, cultural programmes and light installations make for a lovely evening after a day in the mountains.

One place well worth a visit is the Lichterpfad (Path of Lights) in nearby Haus im Ennstal – an evening walk through an illuminated winter landscape that enchants children and adults alike.

Happy to help

We know our region. And we are happy to advise you.

We don’t know Schladming-Dachstein just from tourist brochures. We ski regularly, go ski touring, snowshoeing and winter hiking, and keep an eye on conditions on the ground.

Where is the best skiing today? Which resort suits your children? Where to go when the valley is overcast? Where can you find a lovely winter hike, and what are the current conditions for ski touring?

Just ask us. We will gladly help you choose an activity to suit the current weather, the conditions and your experience. And sometimes, instead of explaining, we simply head out together.

Because with us, your winter holiday doesn't end at the hotel door.
